Apparently, DailyKOS controls the world.

If we criticize the Democrats, they drop to a 10 point deficit in Gallup!

But if we would just cheer them on, they'd be up by 20!  I'm sure of it!

Or at least that's what some people here seem to think.

We do not create reality here.  The most we can possibly hope for is to reflect reality.

So if Markos points to Gallup and heaps a pile of "I told you so" on the Dems...

  1. His criticism did not influence millions upon millions of Americans.  There probably aren't that many that even have the slightest clue who he is.
  1. He is right, he DID tell them so.

National polls do not shift even the slightest bit because a diarist on DailyKOS says they are disappointed with Obama's health care plan, nor do they shift if a diarist says the health care plan is peaches and cream.  Get over yourselves.

It is not us, our optimism or pessimism, that determines the political fate of Democrats.  The actions of those Democrats is what determines their political fate.

The most we can possibly hope to do to shape that fate is to provide some pressure, as minor as it will inevitably be, for them to act right.  We on the "professional left" have a megaphone to let some Democrats know what we think.

If we're not honest, then we aren't doing any good.  Each one of us is, to some degree, representative of the American voters, and as such our truthful opinion is to that degree representative of what the American voters think.  To the extent we provide feedback, putting on a happy face and sugar coating is counter productive as it provides false feedback.  Giving a false impression of what voters think will not change anything when those voters give a completely accurate impression at the ballot box.

But beyond feedback, we try to also convey information to readers about the political (or legal, or environmental, etc.) landscape that we are working in.  And to that goal, we are doing a real disservice to not be as accurate as we can be.

If Markos points to a poll that shows the Dems down 10 points, it's not because he's "taking a dump" on anyone, it's because the Dems are down 10 points in national polls.  We are not Fox News, we don't report what we want to be true.

No matter what list of accomplishments you could spout off, or what list of caveats someone else could spout off about them, the fact remains: the American people are, on balance, not happy with the job the Democrats have done while in power.  Unhappy enough that they are seriously flirting with the idea of putting a group of completely unhinged corporate sellout Republicans back in power, JUST AFTER those Republicans blew everything up.

Sorry to harsh your buzz, but that isn't a sign of great success on the part of the Democrats.  And I'm never going to be cowed into pretending that it is.
